Immersive Explorer

Immersive Explorer is an open source alternative to the default file explorer included in Windows (known as Windows Explorer).
It is designed to provide an "immersive" experience to the user by focusing on the content rather than hiding it behind icons and large window chrome and borders. It allows the user to avoid opening different applications and switching between multiple windows when doing tasks as simple as viewing a picture, thanks to the built-in viewer.

Although it is not a Windows 8 "Metro application", Immersive Explorer is designed around the "Metro" user interface guidelines. It is optimized for tablets and computers with touch-screens, but it also offers a great experience for mouse/keyboard users (with features like scroll-to-zoom, keyboard navigation).

 Immersive Explorer is based on Win32/.NET/WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation). It uses graphical hardware acceleration to display fluid animations and transitions, making it look more modern than the default Windows File Explorer. Note that it's not a complete replacement for the Windows Shell (it's just an alternative to the Windows Explorer) and it doesn't even need administrator rights to be installed.

As Immersive Explorer is not based on WinRT, it means that it can't run on Windows RT devices such as Surface RT (but it works great on Windows 8/8.1 tablets like Surface Pro).

Windows 8.1 Charms Bar Customizer

Charms Bar Customizer is a portable tool and requires no installation. Simply download it from the link provided at the end of this post, extract the contents of the downloaded ZIP file to a folder of your choice, and launch the application to start using it. You’ll probably need to click ‘Yes’ when a User Account Control dialog pops up. You will then be presented with a miniature representation of the Charms bar, which can be used to keep track of the changes you make.

* One thing that is worth mentioning here, based on our testing, is that the application does occasionally fall over. Should you find that Charms Bar Customizer crashes before Explorer has a chance to restart, you can restart it manually as follows:

1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del at the same time and then click the ‘Task Manager’ link.

2. In the Task Manager window that appears,

click the ‘File’ menu and select ‘Run new task’.

3. Type “explorer” or “explorer.exe” in the Run box that appears and click OK.

Icon Cache Rebuilder

Operating System: Windows 7 & Windows 8

If you are having problems with icons not displaying correctly. Run Icon Cache Rebuilder, click Rebuild, wait for Explorer to refresh itself and hit Restart to Restart your computer. Once your computer restarts it will build a new Icon Cache.

Do note that ending Icon Cache Rebuilder before it finishes can result in Windows giving you an error for your user profile as it needs to refresh Explorer and restartcomputer to rebuild the Icon Cache.

If a user runs into the problem of icons displaying incorrectly or icons corrupted, the easiest fix is to remove the IconCache.db file from your local file, restarting explorer then rebooting your computer to make the changes.

With Icon Cache Rebuilder, a user simply loads the application and once the IconCache.db is located will allow a user to click Rebuild to remove the file and restart Explorer.

Once this is done will allow a user to Restart their computer and once logged on the IconCache.db will be re-created.
